For this assignment, you are required to read through the “Finding the Frame” article found under
the Course Resources tab in the Content section of Beachboard.
Your assignment is to type a 3-4-page essay on how aging and ageism impacts our society. Use this essay
as an opportunity to frame your own solution to the issues presented in this report and discuss what your
recommendations would be to change the direction of this narrative. Also, please discuss what must
happen at various governmental levels to have your solutions executed (“The Plan” section, see below).
Devote one to one and a half page(s) to a summary of the issue(s), and the rest of the paper should be used
to present your thoughts and research on the best solutions you plan to implement. In addition to the
Finding the Frame article, please reference a minimum of three outside sources related to your
paper (at least four total sources, your textbook may also be a source).
Keep in mind, this is a narrative paper (first person) and the purpose of this assignment is for you to think
critically about the issue of ageism/ aging and explore your thoughts, feelings, and solutions on these
issues. Write creatively and honestly in explaining your ideas and what society will look like when your
solutions are implemented. Furthermore, discuss specific ways you would put your solutions into place.
Imagine that it is all up to you and you alone to make these aging issues better and more manageable,
what steps are you going to take at various levels to better ageism issues. Please see detailed clarification
on pages 2-3 (following pages) and Rubric on page 4.
Format: 3-4 pages, APA (6th or 7th ed)- Double-spaced; Times New Roman, Size 12 Font, with a
minimum of four sources (including Finding the Frame article if your used it) cited in APA format.
***Do not forget to cite sources in text, as well as in a reference list. No Title page and Abstract
necessary.

This essay requires a lot of reading and a lot more critical thinking, so please do not wait till the last

Clarifications for this paper:
The Reframing Aging Paper (RAP) deals with the often-unspoken issue of ageism, what it is, why it is
an important issue, where it is most prevalent and what can be done about it.
The RAP asks you to research ageism in today’s society, as well as solutions to help in dealing with
ageism issues. The first step in completing this paper is to read through the Instructions (above) for
this paper, as well as the Finding the Frame article (Content tab). These instructions will clarify the
information to discuss in your paper, while the Finding the Frame article is a long report full of
information to reference in your paper (you are welcome to use other sources instead). I understand the
Finding the Frame Report is long, skim the report and find points that interest you if you do not have
time to read the entire report.
Once you have read through these documents, identify one or more issues that stood out to you which
project ageism in today’s society. These issues can be straight from the Finding the Frame article,
issues you have noticed in society not mentioned in course resources, or issues you have experienced
first-hand. As soon as you have the ageism issue(s)/problem(s) you wish to discuss, you will than
explain what the issue(s) is(are) and why this needs to be addressed/ solved. This is where you can
plug in some of your resources that you came across in your research.
From there, you will need to come up with (a) solution(s) to solve the particular issue(s) discussed.
This is your own solution(s), how would you handle this? Does this need to be solved at a local, state
or national level? Lastly, you’ll need to take this a step further (in “The Plan” section) and discuss how
you will implement your solution(s).
More clearly, you want to think about the solution YOU would implement if this was YOUR problem
to fix. Is your solution a city/ regional solution that needs to be worked on within an immediate
community, or is it a statewide solution that needs to be executed in one particular state? It could also
be a national issue that you are trying to tackle, so you would need to get the federal government on
board, or is it a global solution to contact the UN about? As soon as you have a firm grasp of what the
issue(s) is/are and what solution you want to implement and the level at which you choose to
implement it, go ahead and outline your essay and find research to support that there is an issue and
how YOU will solve it. Create an execution plan, find out who your state/ local leaders are that you
will need to contact to make your solution our reality. The Plan section is a detailed description of
your execution plan. Please freely discuss your ideas and solutions to solve ageism in first person and
be very detailed and specific in this section (Execution Plan). You are not required to actually execute
your plan, you are only asked to discuss what you would do if you were the only one in charge to fix
the problem you described.
For example, if the issue you choose to discuss is “the media frames advertisements to make us
believe that growing old is undesirable and we must avoid it at all costs, via anti- aging products etc”.
One solution may be “to regulate media ads so that aging is embraced, rather than frowned upon.” The
Plan could be: “creating awareness and educating the public to understand that the media is using
advertisements to brainwash us to see aging as a negative occurrence. Once Californians are educated,
I will take a petition to get 10,000 signatures state-wide and present it to CA state legislature, in hopes
to get to Governor Gavin Newsom and move that marketers be regulated to not advertise to
Californians in such an ageist fashion. After I complete this in California, I will make sure to carry out

the same process in other states, until I’m then ready to initiative a bill at a federal level, which
mandates that ageist advertisements are banned completely.”
This is a brief example of a summary of issues, solutions to the issues and explain my plan. The
summary discussed the issue, the solutions discussed what needs to be done to better the issue and the
Plan section discusses how the solutions will be implemented. You decide how far the solutions will
be implemented. You may want your solution to stay at a local level, or at a regional level, at a state
level… whatever level it is… how are you going to solve this issue? Explain in detail, in your paper.
You are in the driver’s seat on this one and you decide how this will get better.
The Plan showcases your ideas on how to implement your solution. Act as though this is your issue to
solve, how would you go about solving it and how far do you want to go to solve it (local, regional,
state or national)?
